The Challenge

III Points has treated sound system design as part of its identity for nearly a decade, running L-Acoustics on every stage for eight consecutive years. In 2024 the festival brought L-ISA to North American festival audiences on the 444 stage. For 2025 the brief went further: put L-Acoustics DJ, the first complete spatial audio system built for DJs, in front of a festival crowd for the first time in the United States.

That is a different problem from hanging a bigger system. Spatial playback has to hold up across a ninety-by-ninety-foot two-level room, for artists who have never touched it, on a festival schedule that does not pause for a soundcheck.

The Approach

Technology and systems work across Advance, Procure, Install and Operate. Advance resolved the design against the structure and the schedule. Install brought up eight hangs of L2D in an 8.1 configuration, four frontal stacks of three KS28 in cardioid for low frequency control, and a ring of six coaxial X12 with two KS21i overhead for the immersive monitor mix.

Operate is where the implementation is decided. The system separates a stereo mix into its elements in real time and hands an artist spatial control over them, so the work is as much artist enablement as it is rigging: a default spatialisation mode carried performers who did not want to drive it live, and the ones who did got the room.

Not listening to music. Being inside it.

The Result

The live-sound trades picked it up: FOH and Mix both carried it, alongside AVNation and USITT. So did the artists who played it. Kujo, one of the DJs selected for the system, walked through the preparation and the in-set decisions with Magnetic Magazine afterwards.

III Points returns in 2026, and the open question the trades keep asking is the useful one: which stage adopts spatial audio next, and whether the format travels beyond electronic music.
